"Ghost Exchange" film questions runaway stock market technology

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Washington-based filmmaker is taking a hard look at how the U.S. stock market evolved from a crowded, noisy trading space into a quiet one dominated by machines in her new film, "Ghost Exchange."

The feature-length documentary film portrays the market as a system in need of serious repair, with flaws that could be costing the U.S. economy some 20 million jobs.

The film is being released amid growing attention to problems in the stock market. Investors have been pulling money out of stocks despite the major indexes approaching the highs before the 2008-09 global financial crisis.

Following the near collapse of market-making giant Knight Capital after a trading software glitch on August 1, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission held a roundtable on stock market technology. Meanwhile, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission is getting ready to consider a concept release with ideas for better regulation of electronic trading.

Day-to-day events in the stock market have kept attention focused on high frequency trading. On Wednesday, traders blamed the high-speed machines for a quick, sharp dip in the price of AT&T shares following the company's earnings report. AT&T's stock fell from $34.50 to $33 and bounced back in just four seconds.

The creator of "Ghost Exchange," Camilla Sullivan, a documentarian and marketing professional who wrote and directed the film herself and produced it with her partner, Rob Lyall, said she hopes it will spur regulators and industry leaders to work together to repair the system.

"Are we taking care of and nurturing our capital markets or do we have the potential to lose something very important?" Sullivan said in an interview with Reuters.

"The market has evolved far more quickly than the regulators can regulate," she added. "We're not saying it's their fault. They barely have the skills or the technology or the resources to process the changes."

HIGH-FREQUENCY TRADING

For the film, Sullivan interviewed two of the most outspoken critics of high-frequency trading, Themis Trading co-founders Joe Saluzzi and Sal Arnuk. She also spoke with Direct Edge Chief Executive William O'Brien, Vanguard Group Chief Investment Officer George Sauter and Seth Merrin, the president and chief executive of Liquidnet Holdings.

"Everyone that we selected to interview for this film we believe are the type of industry leaders you would want," Sullivan said.

Sullivan said she is in talks with distributors to try to get "Ghost Exchange" out to the public, and she has submitted the film to "all of the major festivals."

A former corporate communications executive originally from Sydney, Sullivan moved to the United States and began making films in 2007. Through her production company, Arbitrage Pictures, she is also planning a documentary that focuses specifically on initial public offerings.

The drop in the number of IPOs is what Sullivan says is costing the U.S. economy millions of jobs. Citing expert research, Sullivan said small companies' inability to access the stock market in the current environment is preventing new hiring and making it impossible for companies to take bold risks.

In addition to the film company, Sullivan runs Visionista, a Washington-based video marketing company.

She said her interest in the U.S. stock market was driven by her background in finance. When the Dow Jones industrial average plunged 700 points in a matter of seconds on May 6, 2010 in what was later called the "flash crash," it grabbed her attention. High-frequency traders have been blamed for pulling out of the market when stock prices started to fall, accelerating the drop in prices.

"I didn't realize the majority of trades in the United States are executed by computer, and not just by computer but by algorithm. What's that doing to the structure and shape of capital markets?"

But "Ghost Exchange" doesn't focus solely on high-frequency trading. It also deals with issues like order types, tick sizes, and the segmentation that has separated access to large-cap and small-cap stocks in recent years.

Sullivan has concluded that regulators and the industry need to work more closely with each other to fix individual problems. She also believes the SEC should add more market experts to its staff and beef up its presence in New York and Chicago, the centers of U.S. trading.

The SEC's new Office of Analytics and Research, which will focus on monitoring markets and analyzing trading data, is "a good first step," Sullivan said.

"I think it's good that they have the same technology on the outside that the industry has on the inside," she said.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - While Robert Griffin III is quickly becoming the NFL's most exciting quarterback, there's none better than Eli Manning with the game on the line.

Manning one-upped the Washington Redskins' rookie sensation with a pinpoint 77-yard scoring pass to Victor Cruz with 1:13 to play and the New York Giants overcame a late touchdown toss by Griffin to defeat the Washington Redskins 27-23 on Sunday.

"With our offense and Eli at the helm, we're never too worried," Cruz said. "No matter what situation we're in, no matter how many points we need or a field goal we need, we have the confidence we can do it. We have a lot of confidence in each other, and in Eli."

The winning drive was the 22nd of Manning's career in either the fourth quarter or overtime, his second this season and eighth over the past two seasons. This pass might have been one of the most improbable.

It came two plays and 19 seconds after Griffin capped what was a potential winning, 77-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown toss to Santana Moss. The rookie had kept the drive alive with a 19-yard pass off a desperate scramble on a fourth-and-10 play deep in his own territory, and a 24-yard run on the next play.

"He has done it so many times," veteran Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty said of the two-time Super Bowl MVP. "He has really bridged his performance in the 2011 season to the 2012 season. It's just more of the same. He continues to get better. He is probably the most deadly quarterback in the fourth quarter."

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan agreed even though he was miffed that defensive backs Josh Wilson and Madieu Williams allowed Cruz to blow by them on the seam pattern.

"He sure proved it today," Shanahan said after his team (3-4) blew a chance to move into a tie for first place in the NFC East. "It was a great throw. He was double- covered but (Manning) put it right on the money."

Manning, who finished 26 of 40 for 337 yards, had to make the throw a little sooner than he wanted.

"I kind of threw it high and deep and saw the coverage and was hoping Victor saw it the same way I did," he said. "I didn't see the ball get caught. I heard the cheer and that was a good sign. I got up in time to see him run into the end zone."

Manning triumphantly pumped his fist once after the play as the more than 80,000 fans at MetLife Stadium erupted with cheers.

"He did a good job leading his team to victory today," said Griffin, who ran for 89 yards and passed for 258 and two touchdowns. "When the game is on the line, you want the ball in your hand, no doubt about it. He made the play to win it."

Griffin had Washington moving when Moss was tackled by Chase Blackburn after an 11-yard reception and rookie Jayron Hosley recovered at the Washington 43.

"There's no excuse for them, but with all that stuff, we had a chance to win at the end," Griffin said.

The wild finish capped a game in which both quarterbacks also made major mistakes.

Ahmad Bradshaw and Andre Brown scored on 1-yard runs and Lawrence Tynes kicked a pair of field goals for the Giants, who won despite giving up 480 yards in total offense.

Griffin was 20 of 28 with Moss catching both his TD passes. Fellow rookie Alfred Morris gained 120 yards rushing.

The Giants had 396 yards in total offense, with the biggest chunk coming on Manning's pass to Mr. Salsa.

Before the wild finish, the second half was dominated by turnovers.

Griffin was picked off by safety Stevie Brown and his 41-yard return late in the third quarter set up Bradshaw's 1-yard plow-job into the end zone, a play which was reviewed.

Griffin moved Washington into position to tie the game on the next possession, but he fumbled after being sacked by Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph recovered the ensuring fumble at the Giants 29.

On the next play from scrimmage, linebacker Rob Jackson intercepted a quick out by Manning and Forbath kicked a 45-yard field goal to narrow the lead to 20-16 with 5:21 to go.

The Giants were forced to punt on their next series and Washington got the ball back at its 23. After gaining nothing in three plays, Griffin went back to pass on fourth down, eluded Pierre-Paul and then danced around long enough to find tight end Logan Paulsen for a 19-yard gain and a first down at the 42. The 24-yard scamper got the ball to the New York 34 and two plays later Moss beat Hosley and hauled in Griffin's perfect pass as Griffin lay on his back and celebrated like a snow angel.

"He's tough," Blackburn said of Griffin. We played well for three downs got them into a fourth and 10, and had him. JPP had him dead to rights. Any other quarterback and he makes that sack."

Manning and Cruz spoiled the afternoon seconds later.

There were seven offensive possessions in the first half that resulted in 439 total yards, six scores and a 13-13 tie.

On Thursday, the NFLPA mentioned in a court filing an ESPN segment from 1996 titled ?Smash for Cash.?? PFT has obtained a copy of the video, a feature from Andrea Kremer included in the extended NFL Countdown that aired on the day of Super Bowl XXXI.

Here?s the full transcript of the segment seven-minute segment, which featured a variety of players from separate interviews that had been conducted.

Andrea Kremer:? ?Many players around the league earn bonus money by virtue of their achievements.? But it?s not usually courtesy of their own teammates.? But around the league, there?s a little-known but very popular incentive program players call ?Smash for Cash.??

Reggie White:? ?We have guys get interceptions, fumbles.? I came out with like nine thousand and some dollars I had to pay out, because I was paying $500 each big play.?

Kremer:? ??Smash for Cash,? giving cash bonuses for big plays and hits made during a game.? Teams used to pay them money, but now that?s a violation of the salary cap.? So players contribute their own money.? But when the pot ran dry last year in Green Bay, Reggie White established his own incentive program, much to the dismay of his wife.?

White:? ?I went home and told her, I said, ?Sarah, can you write me a check for like $9,500.?? ?What for??? I said, ?Well, I promised I?d pay guys $500 apiece if they made big hits.?? ?Did anyone else do it with you??? ?No.?? ?No??!?

Troy Vincent:? ?You know, everyone likes money.?

Lawrence Taylor:? ?There is a dollar figure on everything you do in the game of football.?

Jeff Lageman:? ?We create pots in our defensive line room of who gets the first sack of the game.?

Cris Dishman:? ?If you knock someone completely off their feet and they land on their butt first.? That?s the big hit pot.?

Gary Plummer:? ?It could mean $300 or $400 for a sack.? It could mean $500 or $600 for an interception of a caused fumbled.?

Cris Dishman:? ?In one week you can win up to $1,000.?

Alfred Williams:? ?These are just individual things that guys just challenge each other with.? It happens all the time in every place that I?ve played in.?

Andrea Kremer, to Ken Norton:? ?Do guys take it seriously??

Norton:? ?No question about it.? That?s $500.? That?s untaxed.? I mean, that?s pretty good.?

Andrea Kremer:? ?Different teams have different rules.? For example, rather than create a pot, Eagle defensive backs and linebackers have to pay each other when they make a big play.?

Vincent:? ?Game day is $50 [per player] for an interception, $100 for a touchdown. . . .?

Kremer:? ?Sometimes before there?s a pot, there?s a concept, like the Beaver.?

Lageman:? ?In New York we had this huge emphasis on caused fumbles, and what we had was [a] thing called ?the Beaver.?? Not only did you get a pot from the players if you caused a fumble, which is a ?Beaver,? but you also got to carry ?the Beaver? for a week, which was a stuffed animal on a rope.? Beaver, as you know, I don?t know if you know or not, if you don?t watch Discovery it?s the most diligent worker of the animal kingdom.? And so we said to cause fumbles you?ve got to be a diligent worker and you?ve got to focus in on it.?

Andrea Kremer:? ?Pete Carroll began this concept with the Jets, and brought it with him to San Francisco.?

Pete Carroll:? ?The beaver has always been known as the most diligent worker in the animal kingdom.?

Ken Norton:? ?The beaver is the hardest working animal in the kingdom.?

Gary Plummer, to Norton:? ?In the animal kingdom.? The most diligent, hard-working animal in the animal kingdom.?

Greg Robinson:? ?From everything I understand, just going back to my schooldays, a beaver is known as the most diligent worker in the animal kingdom, noted for his ingenuity.?

Andrea Kremer:? ?Greg Robinson was Pete Carroll?s defensive coordinator in New York, before taking the same job with the Broncos.? And although his definition of the beaver sounds strangely familiar, Robinson denies using a stuffed animal as a motivational technique in Denver.?

Kremer (watching tape with Robinson):? ?What do you use this for?

Greg Robinson:? ?Use this for?? You?re referring to??

Kremer:? ?The stuffed animal.?

Robinson:? ?The stuffed animal?? There?s no stuffed animal around here.?

Bill Romanowski:? ?I think it was our first game, and I knew nothing about ?the Beaver,? and sure enough Greg Robinson pulls out this little stuffed animal.? And we?re getting ready to go out on the field, and he?s saying, ?The Beaver is out!? The Beaver is out!?? And I?m looking at this guy like he?s nuts.

Andrea Kremer, to Greg Robinson:? ?You?re denying any knowledge of using this for motivational purposes??

Robinson:? ?Uh, absolutely.?

Alfred Williams:? ?He carries it in his pocket and then, you know, before he goes on the field he has a puppet beaver and [laughter] . . . I can?t believe you asked me this, man, but it was great.? It?s great.

Pete Carroll:? ?Probably the all-time ?beave? was the one on the goal line against Buffalo.?

Andrea Kremer:? ?That hit led to an appearance by the Beaver in the 49ers? game film.?

Gary Plummer:? ?As soon as the hit occurred and of course Lee Woodall picked it up and ran it back for a touchdown, the next thing spliced in is about a 10-second clip of the most diligent, hard-working animal in the animal kingdom.? The beaver.?

Andrea Kremer:? ?As the pot gets richer, 11 men go scurrying like a beaver, trying to force a fumble.? Sometimes forgetting the fundamentals.?

Jeff Lageman:? ?We were in New York, we were playing Miami one time.? And I think we had a pot ? it rolled over from one game to the next ? and the pot was at about five or six thousand dollars.? And everybody puts in money.? That was the worst tackling performances we ever had.?

Andrea Kremer, to Pete Carroll:? ?Do you remember that day??

Carroll:? ?Yeah, a little overboard on the emphasis that day, yeah.? That did happen.?

Lageman:? ?It was pathetic.? Everybody was going for the ball.?

Andrea Kremer:? ?The question is why?? Why do a couple of hundred dollars matter to players making millions??

Junior Seau:? ?It?s not the money.? It?s the ego.?

Troy Vincent:? ?The ego gets involved.?

Cris Dishman:? ?It?s the pride factor.?

Lamar Lathon:? ?I think the biggest thing is just winning.? Being able to say, ?Hey, you owe me.? Give me my money.??

Dishman:? ?Oh, we collect.? It?d be right after the game.? And trust me I had all the money pimped on my chest to let everyone know that I won the pot.?

Lageman:? ?I mean it?s ridiculous.? Guys are making probably $100,000 a week, some of these guys.? And they?re getting cranked up over a couple hundred dollars cash pot.? I mean, big deal.?

Kremer:? ?What does the NFL have to say about this incentive program that players insist is not a bounty?? A league spokesman said the ?Smash for Cash? program is within the rules as long as players use their own monies, the amounts are not exorbitant, and the payments are not for illegal hits.?

Pair of statues to honor David Dunbar Buick | Hemmings Blog ...

Even though his namesake car has one of the automobile industry?s deepest histories, David Dunbar Buick exists today as one of the early automotive world?s tragic tales. Buick came to Detroit at age two, persevered to create great cars with his sidekick, master machinist Walter Marr, and took on the young Billy Durant to help market his cars. History makes clear that Durant had other ideas. He turned Buick into the United States? top-selling car, but forced its creator from the firm just before he founded General Motors in 1910 in 1908. Buick, the man, was nearly forgotten by the time he died in Detroit at age 74 in 1929. His fortune had been wiped out by bad investments in California oilfields and Florida real estate.

We recently heard from Lawrence R. Gustin, the longtime Buick PR chief turned automotive historian (and author of a definitive Durant biography), who described a unique unfolding effort to honor Buick appropriately. He is going to be memorialized with two life-size bronze statues: One in Flint, Michigan, the founding home of Buick cars, and the other in his seaside hometown of Arbroath, Scotland. The Flint statue is expected to be unveiled this December. Larry sent us the above photo of Joe Rundell working on his likeness of Buick. Joe is a retired machine repairman at the Chevrolet engine plant in Flint who made a reputation doing custom engraving work on firearms before turning his talents to sculpture. The Buick project is led by Al Hatch, who chairs the Back to the Bricks car show in downtown Flint since retiring from Rockwell Automation. The group he heads is considering locating a new statue of Durant near that of Buick and an existing one of Louis Chevrolet in Flint. That would be second statue of Durant in town; the first has stood for 24 years outside the onetime headquarters of the Durant-Dort Carriage Company. As Larry tells us, Al?s idea is to eventually turn Flint into something of a sculpture garden honoring locally prominent automotive pioneers such as Walter P. Chrysler, Charlie Nash, Albert Champion, Charles Kettering and the Reuther brothers, among others.

High levels of estradiol, progesterone during pregnancy associated with increased risk for HR-negative breast cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? Increased concentrations of the pregnancy hormones estradiol and progesterone were associated with an increased risk for hormone receptor-negative breast cancer diagnosed before age 50, according to the results of a nested case-control study presented at the 11th Annual AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, held in Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 16-19, 2012.

Annekatrin Lukanova, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany, and colleagues examined the effects of hormonal exposure during early pregnancy and its possible association with risk for maternal breast cancer.

"Pregnancy influences maternal risk for breast cancer, but the association is complex and the biological mechanisms underlying the associations are unknown," Lukanova said. "Understanding the mechanisms underlying the protective effect of childbearing on cancer risk can form the basis for primary prevention of breast cancer."

Lukanova and colleagues used the Northern Sweden Maternity cohort to conduct a nested case-control study of 417 controls and 223 women who had donated blood samples during their first trimester of pregnancy and were later diagnosed with breast cancer. About three quarters of the breast cancer cases were hormone receptor (HR)-positive.

The researchers examined two groups of hormones: The first group included estradiol, estrone and progesterone, the concentrations of which increase substantially with pregnancy progression. The second group included testosterone and insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1). During early pregnancy, concentrations of testosterone and IGF-1 are largely similar to prepregnancy concentrations.

"We found that circulating concentrations of IGF-1 and testosterone are directly associated with risk for HR-positive breast cancer, in line with studies in nonpregnant women," Lukanova said.

Results indicated a heightened risk for HR-negative breast cancer diagnosed before 50 years of age with increased levels of estradiol and progesterone.

Lukanova noted that this study was small, that the hormones were measured during the first trimester of pregnancy only, and that further and larger studies will be necessary to characterize the association of pregnancy hormones with risk for hormone-defined maternal breast cancer.
