Police Prepare for a Weekend of Holiday and Football Partying

Ashwaubenon -

For the area around Lambeau Field, the New Year's celebration will start Saturday afternoon and likely won't end until Sunday afternoon after the Packers game.

Area police departments are putting extra officers on the weekend roll call to deal with crowds that may be partying well into New Year's Day.

The Ashwaubenon Public Safety Department won't tell us how many officers will be on duty, but there's no doubt those who are working will be focused on the entertainment district blocks from Lambeau Field.

"It's not every day that we can have a Packer game, New Year's Eve, the Badgers playing," Lieutenant Terry Rottier said.

The New Year's weekend events will attract thousands of partiers and football fans to the stadium district and its surrounding bars and restaurants.

"There's going to be a lot more people in town than it would be on a normal weekend outside of the football season, so we're staffing accordingly," Rottier said.

Besides the department's normal patrol, it's adding extra officers. Some will be on overtime, although no exact cost is being released.

But rather than watching the Times Square ball drop at home, these public safety officers say they took an oath to protect us.

"Our main goal here is that our traveling motor public and our village residents are safe," Rottier said. "We always hope that there's no calls. However, if there is calls we want to be able to react in a timely fashion."

Italy's Monti warns of ongoing market turbulence (AP)

ROME ? Italy saw its borrowing rates fall for the second day running on Thursday but the country's new premier said his government had a lot more to do to convince nervous financial markets that it had a plan to deal with its debt mountain.

Mario Monti said he was encouraged by two days of bond auctions and that his government of technocrats, in office for just a month and a half following the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi's government, was working intensively on preparing a package of measures to get the Italian economy moving again, including efforts to boost competition and liberalize the labor market.

"We absolutely don't consider the market turbulence to be over," he said in a press conference just after the Bank of Italy reported that the country had tapped investors to the tune of around euro7 billion ($9.2 billion) in a range of auctions.

The most keenly-awaited result from Thursday's batch of auctions was the euro2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) sale of ten-year bonds at an average yield of 6.98 percent. That's lower than the 7.56 percent it had to pay at an equivalent auction last month, when investor concerns over the ability of the country to service its massive debts became particularly acute.

However, the country's borrowing rate on the key 10-year bond remains uncomfortably close to the 7 percent level widely considered to be unsustainable in the long run. Greece, Ireland and Portugal all had to request financial bailouts after their 10-year bond yields pushed above 7 percent. In the secondary markets, Italy's yield continues to hover around the 7 percent mark.

Markets had grown fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around euro1.9 trillion ($2.5 trillion). Next year alone, Italy has some euro330 billion ($431 billion) of debt to refinance.

Italy, which is the eurozone's third-largest economy, also sold euro2.54 billion ($3.3 billion) of 3 year bonds at an average interest rate of 5.62 percent, far lower than the 7.89 percent rate it had to pay last month. It also raised euro803 million ($1.05 billion) in the 7-year auction at a rate of 7.42 percent and euro1.18 billion ($1.54 billion) in nine-year bonds at a yield of 6.7 percent.

Thursday's results come a day after Italy raised euro10.7 billion ($14 billion) in a pair of auctions, again at sharply lower rates than those it was forced to pay just a month ago.

The sharp decline in Italy's borrowing costs over the past couple of days suggests that commercial banks from the 17 countries that use the euro may have diverted some money they tapped from emergency loans from the European Central Bank last week to buy the bonds of heavily indebted governments.

It may also suggest rising investor confidence in Italy's recent efforts to reduce its long-term debt through a variety of austerity measures.

Monti's technocratic government got parliamentary approval last week for more spending cuts and tax increases intended to save the country from financial disaster. One of the most controversial aspects of the austerity package is reform of Italy's bloated pension system.

Few consumers trust Facebook storefronts to prevent fraud

San Jose, Calif. & Traverse City, Mich., Dec. 23, 2011 -- ThreatMetrix?, a leading provider of integrated cybersecurity solutions, today announced results of a joint study with The Ponemon Institute, ?Mobile Payments & Online Shopping Survey of U.S. Consumers.? The survey, which looked at U.S. consumers who self-reported they are active users of the Internet, revealed that 53% of consumers do not believe Facebook storefronts are committed to protecting them against fraudsters. A quarter of respondents (23%) were unsure about Facebook?s fraud prevention tactics.

While Google came out ahead of Facebook in terms of fraud prevention intentions, findings also showed more than half of consumers feel Google is more effective than Facebook at actually keeping them safe from online criminals. In fact, Google recently announced it is aiming to enhance its online retailing strategy, which some say will challenge Amazon.com. Google would partner with major retailers and shippers to enable consumers to shop for goods online and receive orders within a day for a low fee.

?If Google moves forward with this service, it introduces another set of fraud prevention concerns,? said Alisdair Faulkner, chief products officer, ThreatMetrix. ?With online shopping becoming more convenient and affordable for consumers, fraudsters will be even more eager to take advantage of underprepared retailers.?

Consumers Have Yet to Shop Via Social Networks

Survey results indicate that consumers have yet to really adopt online shopping habits through social networks. Only 32% of consumers surveyed have browsed a company?s Facebook page and then bought something on the company?s website. In turn, only one in five consumers indicated that they have purchased something directly within a Facebook storefront.

?Consumers have yet to adopt social shopping habits because it?s largely unavailable, with many retailers still trying to figure out their strategy in offering their products via social outlets like Facebook,? said Faulkner. ?And with the current consumer perception that Facebook isn?t doing enough to protect against security breaches, Facebook storefronts still face hurdles in gaining widespread adoption.?

The spam attack on Facebook accounts this past November did little to comfort consumers about security and fraud on the site. According to Faulkner, the security breach sparked concerns about the site?s vulnerability to hackers even though the attack didn?t compromise users? data.

?With new account registration, you have fraudsters who will sign up with social networking sites like Facebook in order to gain access to current user information,? added Faulkner. ?Having a comprehensive fraud prevention strategy is vital for social networks and strategic to their operations, especially if a user experiences spam directly within the site.?

GSM phones vulnerable to hijack scams: researcher (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Flaws in a widely used wireless technology could allow hackers to gain remote control of phones and instruct them to send text messages or make calls, according to an expert on mobile phone security.

They could use the vulnerability in the GSM technology -- which is used by most telecom operators globally and by billions of people -- to make calls or send texts to expensive, premium phone and messaging services in scams, said Karsten Nohl, head of Berlin-based Security Research Labs.

Nohl is a well-regarded expert on mobile security who last year identified a bug in GSM technology that makes calls vulnerable to tapping. He says he is calling attention to these flaws to pressure the industry into beefing up the security of their products.

Mobile security is a hot issue because hackers are paying unprecedented attention to the devices as smartphone sales have outpaced sales of PCs.

Only a few flaws have been found in GSM technology - which stands for Global System for Mobile Communications - over its 20-year history. Industry lobby group GSMA said on Tuesday it did not expect the new findings to affect its views on the security of the technology.

"The GSMA and its mobile network operator members are confident in the security of existing 2G GSM networks and real attacks on real networks against real customers are most unlikely," it said in a statement, adding that newer technologies are safer and not impacted by the new research.

GSMA's statement "on anticipated GSM security announcements" did not make clear whether the industry group had actually seen Nohl's latest research.

Security experts have previously identified a small number of viruses designed to infect smartphones, allowing hackers to take control of the devices and force them to make calls or send text messages. But Nohl said he has discovered a way to leverage previously disclosed vulnerabilities in GSM technology that could potentially threaten hundreds of thousands of phones.

"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short time frame," Nohl told Reuters ahead of a presentation on the topic at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.

SECTOR IN FOCUS

Smartphone malware is popping up at an unprecedented rate as people put more and more valuable information on the devices, using them to hold corporate secrets, conduct banking and function as digital wallets.

GSM became the dominant mobile technology globally in the late 1990s and even though new, faster mobile networks have been rolled out across the world, operators have stuck to their GSM networks to support older phones and to offer service when new networks fail.

The Berlin convention takes place just days after U.S. security think tank Strategic Forecasting Inc (Stratfor) said its website had been hacked and that some names of corporate subscribers had been made public. Activist hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility.

Attacks on corporate landline phone systems are fairly common, often involving bogus premium-service phone lines that hackers set up in countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

Fraudsters make calls to the numbers from hacked business phone systems or mobile phones, then collect their cash and move on before the activity is identified.

The phone users typically do not realize the problem until after they receive their bills, and telecommunications carriers often end up footing at least some of the costs.

Even though Nohl will not present all details of possible attacks at the conference, he said hackers will usually replicate the code needed for attacks within a few weeks.

T-MOBILE, SFR LEAD NEW RANKING

Mobile networks of Germany's T-Mobile and France's SFR offer their clients the best protection against online criminals wanting to intercept their calls or track their movements, according to a new ranking Nohl will unveil at his presentation.

The new ranking, at gsmmap.org, is conducted by security researchers, who hope this will heighten the awareness of operators and consumers on the vulnerability of their mobile communications.

Researchers reviewed 32 operators in 11 countries and rated their performance based on how easy it was for them to intercept the calls, impersonate someone's device or track the device.

"None of the networks protects users very well," Nohl said.

The sample is set to grow from 32 carriers dramatically next year as the tool enables anyone to participate in data gathering

by downloading measuring software to their phones.

Nohl said mobile telecom operators could easily improve their clients' security, in many cases by just updating their software.

Researchers reviewed operators in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, Switzerland and Thailand.

AUTOMOTIVE - DRIVEN: Skyactiv Livens Up Mazda3

Always a favorite, the compact Mazda3 comes back for 2012 with a facelift, an upgraded interior and an optional new engine technology with the inscrutable name Skyactiv that boosts both power and fuel mileage.

Mazda3 is the Japanese automaker?s top-selling car, so that?s the one that gets the first taste of Skyactiv, which will be introduced in a raft of the Mazda?s upcoming gas and diesel engines. For this application, the 2-liter engine gets 155 horsepower, seven more than the standard 2-liter 4, and a torque increase of 10-15 percent to a maximum 148 pound-feet.

Most impressive, though, is the fuel mileage. According to the aces at EPA, the Mazda3 Skyactiv gets 28 city and 40 highway for the six-speed automatic-transmission version, which is quite a feat for a 3,000-pound car. Mileage with the six-speed manual is slightly lower, at 27 city and 39 highway.

Skyactiv technology is a suite of engine and transmission updates to gain power and fuel mileage. (Photo: Mazda) Part of the Skyactiv gain comes from a direct-fuel-injection system with multi-hole injectors, designed to provide the most-effective spray pattern, and dual sequential timing for its 16 valves. The big trick, though, is found in the uniquely shaped pistons and combustion chambers that allow a compression-ratio boost to an exotic 12:1, which is solidly in performance-car range.

Mazda says that the piston cavity shapes engineered for the Skyactiv-G engine ?ensure a shorter combustion time and suppresses the impact on power and torque from engine knocking.?

That compression ratio is for the U.S.-spec cars, where they will be able to run on 87 Octane without pinging themselves apart. The ratio gets even higher for Japan and European models, which run with a remarkable 14:1 compression ratio with a commensurate increase in power, although they must use high-octane gas. Too bad we can?t get that here.

The result for U.S. is the Skyactiv-G engine, which is lively and efficient, and it makes the already enjoyable Mazda 3 even more fun to drive without as many stops to gas up. The standard 2-liter engine remains available in the base model, and there?s still the 2.5-liter four banger that produces 167 horsepower.

Mazda3 is already one of the most fun compacts to drive, with its solid chassis and firm suspension begging to be run through the turns like a sports car. Driving enthusiasts will appreciate the stiff ride though regular folk might find it a too buffeting. The extra power from the lightweight engine adds to the zest.

The Skyactiv-G engine comes standard in the Mazda3 i Touring and Grand Touring models, which is the one in the four-door sedan that I drove. A cool-looking four-door hatchback version is also available, which would be my choice for the extra cargo space.

The test car also came with the new Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission that shifts crisply and cleanly whatever the demands. The torque converter includes a lock-up for
?minimal decrease in fuel economy and an increase in direct drive feel,? Mazda says.

Sure, I would prefer the driving precision of the six-speed manual, which Mazda sportingly makes available for all Mazda3 models, even though the new automatic functions extremely well and gains gas mileage compared with the manual. But for a car with the sporty drivability of Mazda3, I?d say that stickshift would be right on.

The styling update is fairly mild, though I think the designers have managed to tone down that maniacal grin that their cars have been wearing for the past few years. The pronounced front wheel arches are a good look that?s finding its way into competitors? cars.

The upgraded interior has a premium feel, especially for this modest price range, and the Grand Touring Model comes loaded with features, including leather trim, power driver seat, a 286-watt Bose audio system with 10 speakers, Bluetooth and a compact navigation system, all for a base price of $22,300.

The base model starts at around $19,000 and the top-dog Mazdaspeed3 performance model is priced at $24,000, which you?d have to agree is a lot of car for the cash.

The tester also had an optional Technology Package with a blind-spot monitoring system, satellite radio, rain-sensing wipers and adaptive bi-xenon headlights, all for $1,400. With $795 shipping, the Mazda2 Skyactiv sedan came out to $24,495.

An enjoyably sporty compact car with a boost in power and gas-saving technology sounds like just what the doctor ordered. Mazda once again seems to have hit the sweet spot.

Chinese Developer Forum Leaks 6 Million User Credentials

You don't have to trust the client-side hashing function, as ordinarily you're not expecting it to be implemented on top of ordinary security. It's simply a bonus level of security a site can provide

From the user's perspective, the same benefits would be obtained equally well by simply not re-using passwords. From the web designer's perspective, there's no benefit to hashing on the client vs. on the server.

even in the case of SSL transport, in case the receiver is compromised

The hash is still the password, so if the receiver is compromised, you get the password.

If the protocol enforces hashing on the client-side before sending, you don't have to worry about trusting the client-side or javascript being disabled.

Maybe you have confused hashing with encryption.

Manipulating the clock might provide agricultural benefits, as a slower clock increases branching, thereby increasing flower number and fruit yield

Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. The secret to pushing tomato plants to produce more fruit might not lie in an extra dose of Miracle-Gro. Instead, new research from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) suggests that an increase in fruit yield might be achieved by manipulating a molecular timer or so-called "maturation clock" that determines the number of branches that make flowers, called inflorescences.

"We have found that a delay in this clock causes more branching to occur in the inflorescences, which in turn results in more flowers and ultimately, more fruits," says CSHL Assistant Professor Zach Lippman, who led the research team. The new study, which involved a high-resolution, genome-level comparison of the stem cell populations from three tomato varieties that each have different branching architectures, will appear online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences during the week of December 26.

When a plant is ready to flower, populations of stem cells, called shoot apical meristems, which are found in the growing tips, stop producing leaves and begin producing flowers by transforming into "inflorescence meristems." Depending on the tomato variety, inflorescences meristems can make just one branch with a few flowers arranged in the familiar, photogenic zigzag pattern (shown), or multiple branches with dozens of flowers, as seen in closely-related wild relatives of tomatoes, which are native to South America.

Although most domesticated varieties, which have been bred to produce edible, delicious fruit, produce a single inflorescence branch with just a few flowers, some varieties make dozens of branches bearing hundreds of flowers. "Although one might think that all this branching is good, too much branching is not a desirable trait, because the plant spends so much energy on making flowers on those branches that it ends up not having the resources to set those flowers into fruits," explains Lippman. "So there needs to be a balance, which the wild relatives of tomatoes seem to have achieved."

Previous studies hypothesized that extreme branching might be the result of a pause or a delay in the maturation of inflorescence meristems, causing them to sprout extra branches instead of ending their growth by making flowers. "Our previous work as well as those of others hinted at the existence of a timer or clock," Lippman notes. "We wanted to define this clock at the highest resolution, in terms of the genes that modulate the rate of meristem maturation, with the idea that finding the genes that define the clock would enable us to tweak it to get the desired level of branching."

Using a systems biology approach and next-generation sequencing technology to "capture" the transcriptome the activity of all the genes in a genome of stem cells at five different stages of maturation, the team identified nearly 4000 genes that represent the clock. With help from CSHL associate professor and computational biologist Michael Schatz, the team, which included post-doctoral researchers Soon-ju Park and Ke Jiang, compared the clocks of a mutant variety that undergoes extreme branching and a wild relative from Peru that undergoes modest branching.

This analysis revealed that subtle differences in the activity of the clock's genes could alter branching architecture. "Our data showed that wild relatives of tomato have evolved to have a slight delay in maturation, which leads to just a few more branches and a doubling of the number of flowers and fruits compared to what is typically found on cultivated tomatoes grown for ketchup or in the home garden," explains Lippman, who is enthusiastic about the implications of this work and the next steps that his team will take. "We now have a master list of candidate genes that we can go after to manipulate the clock in order to make domesticated tomatoes produce a branching architecture that's similar to the wild variety," he says.

Mel Gibson, wife finalize divorce in Los Angeles (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Mel Gibson's three-decade marriage is officially over.

A judge finalized the actor-director's divorce on Friday from his wife Robyn, who was married to Gibson during his acting heyday and his more recent public downfall.

The judgment entered by Superior Court Judge Mark Juhas keeps virtually all details of the pair's split confidential. Neither Gibson nor his ex-wife, whose name is being restored to Robyn Moore, attended Friday's proceedings.

It does not indicate an official date for the former couple's separation. Robyn Moore did not list a date in her April 2009 divorce filing, although Gibson indicated they had been living apart since 2006.

The former couple have seven children together, but only their 12-year-old son is a minor and subject to a custody agreement.

The Gibsons' divorce has been more dramatically more low-key than Gibson's custody battle with Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva, who the "Braveheart" star agreed in August to pay $750,000 to settle a bitter dispute and split custody of their young daughter.

Recordings that sounded distinctly like the Oscar winning director engaged in a racist and sexist tirade were leaked during the couple's dispute. Grigorieva accused Gibson of domestic violence and he pleaded no contest, although admitted no fault, to a misdemeanor battery count earlier in March.

Robyn Moore came to her estranged husband's defense, filing a brief declaration in the Grigorieva case stating that Gibson had never physically abused her or their children.

Attorneys handling the divorce have worked for months to reach a settlement in the case and records show Robyn Moore signed the final judgment last week. Gibson signed it Wednesday, records show.

Taylor Armstrong "In a Better Place" With Camille Grammer

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Taylor Armstrong says she's "in a better place" with Camille Grammer nowadays. That's good news, we suppose.

Better than a worse place?

Taylor and Camille had an epic falling out after pot-stirrer Grammer revealed on-air that Taylor's husband, Russell Armstrong (who committed suicide in August, after filming on Bravo's hit series wrapped for the season), was physically abusive.

A Terrible Person

Russell then threatened Grammer, infuriating and dividing Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast members Kyle Richards, Lisa VanderPump and Adrienne Maloof.

Though the fight happened months ago, the rift is still a long way from being mended. Knowing these two it will drag on for decades. But things have thawed slightly.

Armstrong, who is releasing a memoir, took a long pause when asked if she and Camille are friends these days. "Um, we are in a better place now," she said.

Not saying much, but a step in the right direction never hurt.

Camille Drops Knowledge

One of those great celebrity feuds where you can't bring yourself to take a side.

Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission Places Blame on American Households (ContributorNetwork)

American households got blasted by the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission because they borrowed too much and saved too little. American households had created an environment of taking on too much risk by over-extending themselves. They did this by placing record debt on themselves and by overstating their income on mortgage applications.

"When the housing and mortgage markets cratered, the lack of transparency, the extraordinary debt loads, the short-term loans, and the risky assets all came home to roost. What resulted was panic," the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission concluded. "We had reaped what we had sown."

High-risk loans were taking place with people all over the country; everyone had a stake in ensuring that the steady flow of mortgages would continue; and when they stopped, the markets simply collapsed. American households thought that they would just take on no interest loans. Then, after a few years, when their houses increased in value, they would be able to borrow from their home or refinance to an even lower interest rate. Financial institutions can be blamed some because they did indeed act in a manner that can be termed reckless.

As the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission says, "Compensation systems--designed in an environment of cheap money, intense competition, and light regulation--too often rewarded the quick deal, the short-term gain--without proper consideration of long-term consequences."

We have been taught since the earliest years in school that the American Dream is homeownership, that the path to that is difficult, yet rewarding because it shows a status of what we have achieved. We have believed that the more money we have, the more we can spend it. In some small way, buying things and having things is not only the American way, but the American right.

Home owners are at fault for the money they borrowed to buy homes they couldn't afford, they are at fault for their spending and believing for every second of the day that the value of their house would just keep going up. The homeowner never believed for a moment that the party would end, never thought for a moment that when the money dried up and the bills came due what they would do. Everything that seemed like the American dream was wrong. Cheap money only made people spend even more money they didn't have, and the high prices of homes were just a mad disease that needed to be cured through a total and complete collapse.

The American household has been put at the center of the recession through television, articles and even our own personal experiences. We have seen homes foreclosed on, we have met the people who have lost everything. We have seen what the recession with the housing collapse has done to the country as a whole through high unemployment, state budget shortfalls and lost hope in our government. The American household pursuit of home ownership ended in disaster, and while rebuilding a better tomorrow for some might take a little longer, it remains to be seen if the lessons we learned from the recession will remain much longer.

Killer flu research to be censored

It was probably the most important research on flu in years, but most people won't be allowed to read it all. As New Scientist revealed in September, researchers at the University of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, created a mutated H5N1 bird flu that could go pandemic ? and would be lethal to half its victims.

Bioterrorism experts in the US immediately questioned whether the method for making such a plague should be published. Now the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity has recommended that the "general conclusions be published, but that the manuscripts not include the methodological and other details that could enable replication of the experiments by those who would seek to do harm".

"We will respect the advice and try to publish in censored form," says the study's lead author, Ron Fouchier of the University of Rotterdam. "But we still believe the detailed data should be published. We have the moral obligation to share the details with those that need to know." Researchers must investigate the threat posed by H5N1 evolving in the wild, he believes, as that far outweighs the harm that hypothetical bioterrorists might do.

"The great benefit of the work is that it shows how easily H5N1 could mutate to cause a pandemic of terrible severity, and that we really can't afford to scale down our preparedness," says Peter Openshaw, head of the centre for respiratory infection at Imperial College London.

The bioterrorism science advisory board says that the US government is developing a mechanism to give "secure access" to risky information "to those with a legitimate need", and an "oversight policy [for] evaluating research that has the potential to be misused".

Not just US

Fouchier does not see how a mechanism outside the standard scientific channels would be possible, but should one be imposed, "public health experts rather than biosecurity officials should decide who to share the information with", and they should not only be US citizens, he says.

"If work on viruses in the western world comes under government control, we will rapidly fall behind the hundreds of well-equipped labs that are not under those controls," fears Openshaw. He says that the existing rules balancing risks and benefits of research "mostly get it about right".

D. A. Henderson of the University of Pittsburgh, who led the eradication of smallpox, notes that virologists already review and regulate work with smallpox virus. But flu could be a worse threat, and "special measures are warranted".

The Rotterdam research will be published in the journal Science accompanied by explanations about why it was done, and the measures taken to ensure the virus did not escape.

Wacky and tacky star moments of 2011

By Nekesa Mumbi Moody, The Associated Press

Historians are usually able to look back and pinpoint the factors that caused the greatest of nations to fall into decline. If it ever comes time to dissect what happened to the United States, they will likely boil it down to one word: WINNING.

Yes, folks ? when a Charlie Sheen manic outburst becomes an inspirational motto for a nation, it's the beginning of the end. Sadly, historians will likely have other moments to illustrate our cultural collapse, including Kim Kardashian's blink-and-you-missed-it marriage, which generated more money than some cities' annual budgets, and the fact that some people took Donald Trump's possible presidential candidacy seriously.

No wonder the Occupy Wall Street protest avoided the 1 percent's crazy sibling ? Hollywood.

KEEPING IT KLASSY: Some things are meant to last one season: bright pink flip-flops, a relationship with George Clooney, the McRib at McDonald's. But not marriage. And while celebrity marriages can flame out quickly, the implosion of Kim Kardashian's 72-day union with Kris Humphries was all the more spectacular because of the hype that preceded it: the 20.5-carat diamond engagement ring, the engagement party, the three wedding-day gowns, the two-part TV special ? even Kate Middleton would have said, "Enough already!" It was more distasteful because it was filmed for her reality show, garnering her more cash than gifts. By the end of the year, the backlash was so strong, she headed to Haiti for charity work, looking to improve her bruised image. Or, perhaps, to find hubby No. 3.

IF THIS IS WINNING, LOSING MUST REALLY SUCK: Celebrities have meltdowns in public all the time, yet we hadn't had a really epic breakdown since Britney Spears shaved her head bald. Maybe that's what made Charlie Sheen's collapse so transfixing. He gave us everything we expected in a train wreck ? and more: Custody battles! Jittery interviews! Goddesses! And of course, "WINNING!" Watching his daily dose of acting crazy was more entertaining ? and addictive ? than any episode of "Two and a Half Men." But we overdosed when Sheen went on his stand-up tour, which basically gave him a pass to go on rambling diatribes on foolish people's dimes. Sadly, even as pathetic as it was, it still had more live vocals than a Britney tour.

TODAY'S WORD OF THE DAY IS "EWWWWWWW": We didn't realize Justin Bieber had reached puberty, so it came as a shock when Mariah Yeater claimed he was the baby daddy to her months-old son following an alleged romp after one of his concerts ? when she was 19, and he was just 16. A paternity suit was filed, DNA tests were bandied about, all while Maury Povich salivated from the sidelines. But, alas, we never got a chance to see Bieber do the customary pimp-walk strut to the phrase "You are NOT the father!" Yeater withdrew her paternity claim as her story started to collapse and Bieber took a paternity test. We would have preferred that Biebs prove his manhood with a passable mustache.

THE DONALD WOULD RATHER BE EMPEROR: Donald Trump got the media buzzing when he announced his intention to run for president ? maybe. To burnish his credentials as a conservative Republican, he seized on the so-called "birther" bandwagon by stoking doubt about President Barack Obama's U.S. citizenship. In the end, Obama released his Hawaiian "long form" birth certificate proving he is indeed a "natural-born citizen," as the Constitution requires. And, unfortunately, so is Trump.

WHY CELEBS SHOULD FLY IN PRIVATE JETS: Because they cannot behave themselves on commercial flights. Alec Baldwin was kicked off a flight for refusing to stop playing a cellphone game while the plane was parked at the gate. Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong was denied a seat because of his sagging pants, and Gerard Depardieu urinated on a plane ahead of takeoff, apparently unable and/or unwilling to hold his bladder until he got the OK to move about the cabin. Next time you see a celebrity on your plane, instead of asking for an autograph, ask for a seat far, far away.

PROOF THERE ARE NO SURPRISES IN LIFE: Kat Von D broke up with Jesse James, saying she was shocked ? yes shocked! ? that James, who was unfaithful to Sandra Bullock during her Oscar campaign, had also allegedly cheated on her ? with 19 women.

TONE DEAF: At just 13, Rebecca Black became a sensation ? and laughingstock ? of the Internet, thanks to her hard-on-the-ears tune, "Friday," which her parents paid producers to make, along with the now infamous video on YouTube. Seemingly oblivious to the wonders of Auto-Tune, Black's nasally warbling became embedded in the brain like a bad virus. And yet she sounded better than any LMFAO tune.

LOOK, IT'S CHRIS BROWN ? DUCK!: Chris Brown's star, seemingly forever tarnished after beating then-girlfriend Rihanna, was on the rise when he decided to go on "Good Morning America" to perform and talk to host Robin Roberts. But Roberts' decision to ask about the Rihanna incident got under Brown's skin. After the interview, he trashed his dressing room, even breaking a window. Yet people continued to buy copies of his comeback album. Apparently, fear is the best motivator.

WAS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE THE SEQUEL TO THE FILM "TWINS"? When Maria Shriver announced that she was divorcing Arnold Schwarzenegger after 25 years of marriage and a stint in the California governor's mansion, we thought it was because she'd finally seen those tiny Speedo pictures. But then we learned that not only did he cheat on her with the family housekeeper, but he and the housekeeper had a son together around the time Maria gave birth to their child, also a boy. Guess it wasn't the wisest decision to let Schwarzenegger be in charge of giving out the employee bonuses.

What do you think about the wacky/tacky year just past? Let us know in the comments.

'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood in car accident

Things started to look up for "Teen Mom's" Amber Portwood when Indiana's Child Protection Services had closed its investigation on whether or not the reality star was a fit mother, but quickly afterwards, things turned sour.

  1. More Entertainment stories
    1. 'War Horse' gallops forth on Christmas

Plenty of big movies roll out this week, including "War Horse," "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "We Bought a Zoo" and more.

    2. Child endangerment: TV's hottest new trend?
    3. 'M:I 4' gives Bond a run for his money
    4. 'Dancing' winner J.R. Martinez to be a father
    5. Why Howard Stern is perfect for 'Got Talent'

Yesterday, Portwood was faced with the possibility of going to jail after violating her probation, and now, Leah's mom is dealing with the consequences of rear-ending a man's vehicle in Indiana.

Sigh.

MORE: Portwood: "I've Been Diagnosed With Extreme Bipolar and Disassociative Disorder"

E! News learns that the accident happened yesterday at 8:08 p.m. in Anderson, Ind. Portwood was at fault for following the 2003 Saturn S12 car too closely, which resulted in hitting the car with her 2005 Cadillac STS when the other driver decided to suddenly brake.

The report estimates the damages to the man's car to be up to $2,500.

Report: 'Teen Mom' Amber violated probation

She claimed that "the car in front of her slammed on her breaks and suddenly made a turn," also saying that the other person didn't use a signal, although he says he did.

"This guy slammed on his brakes in front of me when I was on my way to see my mom. It barely scratched the car though," Portwood tells E! News. "I wasn't even going the full speed limit. I was slowing down and boom, he slammed on his brakes. I guess they missed their turn and stopped real fast to turn. It sucks."

Getting into the Automotive Design Field | CAREEREALISM

RSSNew here? If so, we encourage you to click here ? and get our newest posts by e-mail. Thanks for visiting CAREEREALISM, a top-three ranked career advice blog.

Silver Modern CarThere are plenty of creative people in the world.?If you?re one of them, then there are some great career options for you in the automotive industry.?If you want to join the automotive field via creative avenues and obtain a well-paying job, then getting into automotive design may be one of your best options.?To be the one that comes up with a new design for future cars and trucks sounds sure exciting to us, even if it?s just to design the exterior curves and lines, or to lay out the ergonomics of the interior. For inspiration and example, see Michelle Christensen, a 28-year old exterior designer recently out of college. She herself designed and saw to completion the majority of the design of the new Acura ZDX.

When it comes to automotive design, the pinnacle of the profession is to be responsible for developing new vehicles.?This ranges from creating a completely new vehicle from scratch (like Michelle), or changing the appearance of a current model for a new release.?In the field, you could concentrate your efforts on the exterior or interior of the vehicle, or details such as the color and trim. In order to excel in the automotive design field, you will need to be truly creative.?Being artistic certainly wouldn?t hurt your chances of being good in your field, though individuals with an engineering passion certainly excel as well.?It will be very important for you to stay updated with new trends in this position when designing future cars ? you?ll likely be subscribed to industry magazines, will attend conferences, and many other things. You will need to know everything and anything about design, and what you predict will be hot and sell well years down the line.

There are many different skills required for you to be successful as an automotive designer. It?s required that you have strong communication skills since you?ll often be working on a team, and/or selling ideas to higher-ups. You will also need to know your way around computers as well.?Although you?ll likely have plenty of sketches of new concepts on paper, you certainly won?t design new cars on it.?Instead, you will need to be familiar with computer-aided design software such as CATIA and others which are taught at many colleges and universities. Don?t worry, you still get to work with clay, and make scale models of cars too.

You will need more than a high school diploma in order to join the automotive design field.?You will need to go to college and get a bachelor?s degree at the least.?Some of the most suitable professions include mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, architecture, and industrial design. While still attending school, it?s vital that you start building your portfolio by being actively involved in the profession (this could be from projects you do in your spare time, to being involved with a club on campus, or something such as a senior project.?You will need to have an excellent portfolio in order to get into ?the field, since many call themselves ?creative,? but don?t have much to show for it in their professional portfolio.

When deciding on the car design college or university that you want to attend, it?s important that you choose carefully.?Picking a college that?s located near many automobile companies and/or popular in the field is often the best choice, as potential alumni will be the ones hiring. These schools also work with companies to place graduates so you may have job prospects immediately after graduating. This doesn?t mean that you should only look for a college that?s popular with the automobile industry however.? You need to ensure that the particular school you?re going to will teach you exactly what you want to learn.?You should visit multiple colleges and talk to some of the students in attendance or who have gone on to graduate. Get a feel for the vibe of the school, and see who your peers would be.

After you graduate with a bachelor?s degree, you should have little trouble obtaining a lower-level job paying from $30,000 to $50,000 per year.?You could increase this over time if you?re good, however, you will have plenty of opportunities to advance.?Besides being passionate and knowledgeable, you would still need to further your education in order to reach for the top of the totem pole. Getting your master?s degree in automotive engineering will certainly put you on the right track.?You may even want to consider going into management like many other auto designers have done.?Getting a degree in business administration would be the best step then.

You can find a job with many different establishments as an auto designer.?You can work directly for a large multinational corporation such as Honda or General Motors.? Alternatively, you could choose to get involved with a start-up alternate fuel vehicle company or an exotic/race car designing firm. If you really want to be an excellent automotive designer regardless of your field/specialization, you?ll need to realize how quickly trends can change and be able to respond quickly. Many auto designers make the decision to join a professional organization.?This provides you with plenty of benefits such as seeing major developments in the field first, discussing trends and ideas with your peers as well as more experienced designers, and it never hurts to network regardless of your profession.

If you?re thinking of a career in the automotive industry, we hope you find what we provided here meaningful, and that you?ll go ahead and start researching and narrowing down your options and start getting thinking about your career. Cars aren?t going anywhere, and there?s always the need for new and better designers?just look at some of the bland cars today! Good luck!
