Google is constantly trying to seamlessly blend techology and everyday life together, and now with their new application, they are getting closer and?closer to accomplishing just that.
According to the Huffington Post, Google has come out with a new application called ?Field Trip?. This ingenious application works as an automated guide to the world around you.
As you carry on with your day to day lives, ?Field Trip?, available on Android devices (with an iPhone version on the way), is designed to run in the background of your phone. The application will?ping you with notifications about nearby landmarks, surrounding restaurants and miscellaneous local trivia as your day progresses.
?When you get close to something interesting, [the app] pops up a card with details about the location,???Field Trip?s?description reads. ?No click is required. If you have a headset or bluetooth connected, it can even read the info to you.?
According to the?app?s website, ?Field Trip? has two settings. The first setting is??Feeling Lucky?, which?will send the user an occasional notification of something interesting. The second setting is ?Explore?, which will push a great deal of information to the user. The app can also be turned off to give the user a break from all of the notifications.
The types of notifications that are pushed to the user can be adjusted based on the specific user?s mood or likes. If you want to see more notifications about shopping, then you can adjust the ?Offers and Deals? notifications setting, or if you want to learn more about certain builings or landmarks, you can adjust the ?Architecture? or ?Historic Places? feeds.
In order to produce and upkeep this constant stream of information, Google has teamed up with several large companies such as?Zagat (recently purchased by Google), Eater, Inhabitat and The Daily Secret.
??The idea behind the app was to build something that would help people connect with the real, physical world around them,? a vice president of product, John Hanke,?told the New York Times.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration says it has approved a first-of-a-kind heart-zapping implant from Boston Scientific that that does not directly touch the heart.
Implantable defibrillators use thin wires to send electrical signals that disrupt dangerous heart rhythms. Surgeons have traditionally connected the wires to the heart through a blood vessel in the upper chest.
The new device from Boston Scientific uses wires that sit just below the skin's surface and do not need to be threaded through the heart's blood vessels.
Natick, Mass.-based Boston Scientific Corp. acquired the device through a $150 million buyout of San Clemente, Calif.-based Cameron Health. Under the terms of the deal, Boston Scientific will pay an additional $150 million for FDA approval, plus up to $1 billion in payments based on future sales figures.

LONDON (AP) ? Market trading proved volatile Friday ? the last working day of the quarter ? as investors continued to fret over Spain.
Trading is often complicated at the quarter's end as it is the deadline for certain trades and agreements to be settled. This sometimes involves buying and selling large amounts of stocks at the last minute in order to make a profit on a deal.
"It is end week, end month and end quarter," said Neil MacKinnon, global macro strategist at VTB Capital. "Investors are alert to impending year-end."
Investors also remained cautious over Spain, a day after the country's government announced big spending cuts it hopes will convince potential bailout creditors and investors it has a rock-solid plan to heal its public finances.
The positive momentum generated by Thursday's Spanish budget ground to a halt Friday as investors waited for the results of stress test results into 14 of the country's banks, which are due after European markets close. Rating agency Moody's is also expected to pronounce on its view on Spain's creditworthiness. There are concerns that the agency will downgrade Spain's government debt to junk status.
Craig Erlam, markets analyst at Alpari, said a downgrade to junk status could "create some panic" among holders of Spanish debt that could prompt a sell off and force yields higher.
"The positive side to this is this could accelerate the bailout request," Erlam said. The other 16 countries that use the euro and the European Central Bank are prepared to help Spain financially, should it need it, but Madrid has so far put off a request.
By midday in Europe, shares were mixed, with Madrid's IBEX index underperforming its peers. The IBEX was trading 1.6 percent lower at 7,712. Elsewhere, Germany's DAX was 0.4 percent lower at 7,261 while the CAC-40 in France fell 1 percent to 3,404. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares 0.1 percent lower at 5,775.
Wall Street was posed for a slightly lower open, too, with both Dow futures and the S&P 500 futures down 0.4 percent.
On Thursday, the Spanish government said it planned to cut overall spending by ?40 billion ($51 billion) in 2013, a move that won a generally positive response in financial markets. Many investors think the cuts will lay the ground for Spain, the fourth largest economy in the eurozone, to seek financial help from fellow countries in the bloc and the European Central Bank.
Earlier this month, the ECB announced a new bond-buying plan largely designed to keep a lid on Spain's borrowing costs. However, Spain would first have to ask for financial aid from fellow eurozone countries.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has balked at doing so, partly because it could require new austerity cuts. The hope is that the new budget measures are enough to stem any further requirements in the event of a request for help.
"Yesterday's news was clearly a move to forestall the kind of punitive measures we saw imposed on Greece and others," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG.
Other financial markets were fairly subdued, with the euro up 0.1 percent at $1.2922 and a barrel of oil up 12 cents at $91.99.
Earlier in Asia, stocks had been buoyed by speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.4 percent to 20,840.38. South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.4 percent to 1,996.21. But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.9 percent to 8,870.16, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell a further 1.3 percent in August.
Mainland Chinese shares rose ahead of an extended holiday next week. The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.5 percent to 2,086.17 and the Shenzhen Composite Index rose 1.9 percent to 853.83.
Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 41 cents to $92.26 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 on the Nymex on Thursday.
In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2934 from $1.2917 late Thursday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.59 yen from 77.62 yen.

Pity the poor, beleaguered vampire: Not even he can find fresh blood these days.
Drained by teen franchises and endless reincarnations, the once-mighty night-stalker has become the stuff of kiddie cartoons ? the kind, doting daddy at the heart of Hotel Transylvania.
Drafting its central design from a template of Gothic fiction and every Scooby-Doo episode ever written, this new pony from Sony?s animation studio features a scary hotel, where all kinds of ghouls gather for the holidays.
To any mortal, the Hotel Transylvania would be the scariest place on Earth, since it?s run by Dracula and plays host to Frankenstein, werewolves and any variety of monster looking for some alone time. Fortunately, Dracula has gone to great lengths to keep the mortals out, because he feels humans have ruined his life.
Way back in the past, when Dracula lived a meterosexual-meets-Heathcliff lifestyle, he fell in love. The only problem was, the townsfolk were afraid, accused him of being a vampire (because he was) and burned his house down.
His wife perished in the blaze, but their baby daughter survived. A century later, his little baby girl is all grown up, and now she wants to explore the world outside ? leaving daddy Dracula a little overprotective.
Couple her wanderlust with the arrival of a backpacking human boy who loves far-flung places, and suddenly, our bloodsucking patriarch is starting to look a lot like Archie Bunker in a cape.
And that?s what this whole movie feels like: Archie trying to protect Gloria in all the wrong ways, and getting into all sorts of nasty trouble with his friends. Granted, any All in the Family references will be lost on the tots squirming in their seats for this 3-D spectacle.
They may not even know who Adam Sandler is, which means any Opera Man reference will also end up on the floor, with the rogue kernels of popped corn.
Ah. To be young and not feel the weight of repetition that builds up behind your eyeballs and sinks into your throat ? a quiet gurgle of dreariness aerated by rage.
Yet, how sad, too, that some young child will experience Hotel Transylvania as their first big-movie experience, with glasses and all.
Where the luckiest generation had Bambi to carve the edges of the big screen into memory, these poor souls will end up watching an extended string of dirty diaper jokes as delivered by Sandler and a host of other Saturday Night Live alumni.
Perhaps it was this particular source of humour that became the most irritating, even if it did make the six-year-olds in the audience laugh out loud ? every time, especially if there was an accompanying cloud of green gas emanating from someone?s trouser leg.
And let?s face it: even the most uptight among us can bust a gut with a good friend and a whoopee-cushion.
However, one good fart joke does not beg for another. And one played-out father-daughter arc can stink up a whole movie without any fresh air.
The script for Hotel Transylvania is baseline and completely predictable, hoping we may mistake the odd Twilight reference and the monster point of view as updates. It doesn?t work, because for all the saucy condiments, the burger is a sitcom patty stuffed with poopy-pants jokes.
The filmmakers were smart enough to nod to the masters of horror, conjuring images of such original classics as Frankenstein onscreen, but they don?t follow through with any new material.
Despite song and dance numbers featuring the vocal talents of Selena Gomez (who plays the daughter, Mavis), three-dimensional razzle-dazzle and eye-popping action sequences fuelled by top-notch computer animation, everything about Hotel Transylvania feels anemic.
Even the film seems to acknowledge its own ennui when it gives us a scene where Dracula explains why he no longer needs to kill people: They perfected blood substitutes, and he can just buy them off the shelf.

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) ? For the older ? OK, squarer ? side of the generation gap, Andy Williams was part of the soundtrack of the 1960s and '70s, with easy-listening hits like "Moon River," the "Love Story" theme and "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" from his beloved Christmas TV specials.
The singer known for his wholesome, middle-America appeal was the antithesis of the counterculture.
"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," Williams once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred ? not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."
The 84-year-old entertainer, who died Tuesday night at his Branson home following a yearlong battle with bladder cancer, outlasted many of the decade's rock stars and fellow crooners such as Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. He remained on the charts into the 1970s and continued to perform into his 80s.
Williams became a major star in 1956, the same year as Elvis Presley, with the Sinatra-like swing number "Canadian Sunset." For a time, he was pushed into such Presley imitations as "Lips of Wine" and the No. 1 smash "Butterfly."
But he mostly stuck to what he called his "natural style" and kept it up throughout his career. In 1970, when even Sinatra had temporarily retired, Williams was in the top 10 with the theme from "Love Story," the Oscar-winning tearjerker. He had 18 gold records, three platinum and five Grammy award nominations.
Williams was also the first host of the live Grammy awards telecast and hosted the show for seven consecutive years, beginning in 1971.
Movie songs became a specialty, including his signature "Moon River." The longing Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad was his most famous song, even though he never released it as a single because his record company feared such lines as "my huckleberry friend" were too confusing and old-fashioned for teens.
The song was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the cherished 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," but Mancini thought "Moon River" ideal for Williams, who recorded it in "pretty much one take" and also sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards. Although "Moon River" was covered by countless artists and became a hit single for Jerry Butler, Williams made the song his personal brand. In fact, he insisted on it.
"When I hear anybody else sing it, it's all I can to do stop myself from shouting at the television screen, 'No! That's my song!'" Williams wrote in his 2009 memoir titled, fittingly, "Moon River and Me."
At a Wednesday matinee at Williams' Moon River Theatre in Branson, a performer told the crowd that Williams would have wanted the show to go on, and it did. The first show after his death included a moving video of him performing "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."
"It was very emotional, very sad," said Barbara Cox of Atlanta, who came to Branson on vacation. "We've lost a great man."
Carol and Ruth Harding, sisters who traveled from suburban Denver to attend a second show Wednesday evening, said they've been Williams fans since they were teenagers. The women, both in their early 70s and married to brothers, said they'd seen him perform numerous times, including 10 trips to his Christmas show.
"It's not going to be the same without him," Ruth Harding said. "It's like losing a family member. He's been part of our family."
Because of illness, Williams had not performed in several months
He had been a constant presence on television with "The Andy Williams Show," which lasted in various formats through the 1960s and into 1971. It won three Emmys and featured Williams alternately performing his stable of hits and bantering with guest stars.
It was on that show that Williams ? who launched his own career as part of an all-brother quartet ? introduced the world to another clean-cut act ? the original four singing Osmond Brothers of Utah. Four decades later, the Osmonds and Williams would find themselves in close proximity again, sharing Williams' theater in Branson.
Williams did book some rock and soul acts, including the Beach Boys, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson. On one show, in 1970, Williams sang "Heaven Help Us All" with Ray Charles, Mama Cass and a then-little known Elton John, a vision to Williams in his rhinestone glasses and black cape. But Williams liked him and his breakthrough hit "Your Song" enough to record it himself.
For many families, Williams and his music were a holiday tradition. His annual Christmas specials continued long after his show ended, featuring Williams dressed in colorful sweaters singing favorites that almost always included "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," a song written for Williams that became a holiday standard.
Williams' act was, apparently, not an act. The singer's unflappable manner on television and in concert was mirrored offstage.
"I guess I've never really been aggressive, although almost everybody else in show business fights and gouges and knees to get where they want to be," he once said. "My trouble is, I'm not constructed temperamentally along those lines."
His wholesome image endured one jarring interlude.
In 1976, his ex-wife, former Las Vegas showgirl Claudine Longet, shot and killed her lover, skiing champion Spider Sabich. The Rolling Stones mocked the tragedy in "Claudine," a song so pitiless that it wasn't released until decades later. Longet, who said the slaying was an accident, spent only a week in jail. Williams stood by her. He escorted her to the courthouse, testified on her behalf and provided support for her and their children, Noelle, Christian and Robert.
Also in the 1970s, Williams was seen frequently in the company of Ethel Kennedy, Robert Kennedy's widow. The singer denied any romantic involvement.
He was born Howard Andrew Williams in Wall Lake, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1927, and began performing with older brothers Dick, Bob and Don in the local Presbyterian church choir. Their father, postal worker and insurance man Jay Emerson Williams, was the choirmaster and the force behind his children's career.
When Andy was 8, Williams' father arranged for the kids to have an audition on Des Moines radio station WHO's Iowa Barn Dance. They were initially turned down but kept returning until they were finally accepted. The show attracted attention from Chicago, Cincinnati and Hollywood. Another star at WHO was a young sportscaster named Ronald Reagan, who would later praise Williams as a "national treasure."
The brothers later worked with Kay Thompson, a singer who eventually became famous for the "Eloise" children's books. She had taken a position as vocal coach at MGM studios, working with Judy Garland, June Allyson and others. After three months of training, Thompson and the Williams Brothers broke in their show at the El Rancho Room in Las Vegas, drawing rave reviews and as much as $25,000 a week.
After five years, the three older brothers, who were starting their own families, had tired of the constant travel and left to pursue other careers.
Williams initially struggled as a solo act and was so broke at one point that he resorted to eating food intended for his two dogs.
A two-year TV stint on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show" and a contract with Cadence Records turned things around. Williams later formed his own label, Barnaby Records, which released music by the Everly Brothers, Ray Stevens and Jimmy Buffett.
Williams was a lifelong Republican who once accused President Barack Obama of "following Marxist theory." But he acknowledged experimenting with LSD, opposed the Nixon administration's efforts in the 1970s to deport John Lennon and in 1968 was an energetic supporter of Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign.
When Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in June 1968, just after winning the California Democratic primary, Williams sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" at his funeral.
"We chose that song because he used it on the campaign trail," Williams later said of Kennedy, who had been a close friend. "He had a terrible voice, but he loved to sing that song. The only way I got through singing in church that day was by saying, 'This is my job. I can't let emotion get in the way of the song.' I really concentrated on not thinking about him."
After giving up touring, he settled in Branson, with its dozens of theaters featuring live music, comedy and magic acts, and was among the first wave of national entertainers to perform there regularly.
When he arrived in 1992, the town was dominated by country music, but Williams changed that with his classy, $13 million theater in the heart of the entertainment district, where he did two shows a night, six days a week, nine months of the year. Only in recent years did he cut back to one show a night. His most popular time was Christmas.
Not everyone in Hollywood accepted his move to the Midwest. "The fact is most of my friends in LA still think I'm nuts for coming here," he told The Associated Press in 1998.
He and his second wife, the former Debbie Haas, divided their time between homes in Branson and Palm Springs, Calif., where he spent his leisure hours on the golf course when Branson's theaters were dark during the winter months following Christmas.
Retirement was not on his schedule. As he told the AP in 2001: "I'll keep going until I get to the point where I can't get out on stage."
Williams is survived by his wife and his three children.

Gold may have more prestige and a broader fan base, but experts say, silver is where the real action is right now. In the past 3 months alone, the price of silver has risen 25%, while gold's recent run up, albeit impressive, has only been about half as strong.
Still, whether it's gold or silver or platinum or palladium you are chasing, the penchant for precious metals has been reignited by the dovish central bank action commonly called QE3. But Tom Lydon, the editor of ETF Trends, says when it comes to silver, there's more to this hard asset story than monetary policy, inflation concerns and fear.
"There's been a huge increase in emerging market demand as more people move up to the middle class, and silver is an easier acquisition for them," Lydon says in the attached video. "Although somewhat of a speculative investment ten years ago, gold and silver are now becoming a foundation investment." He says the average investor no longer just puts 60% in stocks and 40% bonds anymore.
Naturally, some pros have doubts that the current run can last, or at least will run out of steam. While there is really no way to tell what the future holds, metals traders and analysts do say that silver tends to outperform in a bull market, underperform in a bear markets, but overshoot in either directions.
While silver is unarguably more volatile, Lydon points out that it is still almost 40% below its highs of two years ago, while gold is just 15% beneath its $2,000 peak a year ago.
Ease of access via ETFs is another reason why metals are gaining market share in portfolios Lydon says, calling the precious metal investing process ''much more free flowing." While he says the largest silver fund is the iShares Silver Trust (SLV), the ETFS Physical Silver (SIVR) and the Powershares DB Silver (DBS) are also very widely held and actively traded.
In addition, just like their brethren in the gold patch, Lydon says some investors prefer to own the metal producers instead of the metal itself and do so via mining ETFs such as the Global X Silver Miners (SIL) or the iShares Global Silver Miners (SLVP). But no matter what route feels right, Lydon says to would-be investors, "it's exciting, but you've got to do your homework."

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's main opposition party picked former prime minister and security hawk Shinzo Abe as its new leader, giving him another shot at the premiership and possibly alarming Beijing and Seoul, both locked in territorial disputes with Tokyo.
Opinion polls suggest that the conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), ousted in 2009 after more than 50 years of almost non-stop rule, will come first in a lower house election expected within months. That would put its leader in position to become the next prime minister.
Abe, 58, abruptly quit after just a year on office due to ill health in 2007. He won a run-off ballot against Shigeru Ishiba, 55, a conservative security expert.
All contenders in the race to lead the LDP had struck hawkish tones as a row with China flared this month after Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's government bought some disputed islets in the East China Sea from their private Japanese owner.
Abe was the most vocal in urging Tokyo take a tougher line in its territorial rows with China and South Korea.
"I think China will be alarmed as will Korea," said Sophia University professor Koichi Nakano. "I think this might push some of the leaders to start improving ties before the LDP comes to power."
Nakano said Abe's election could be good news for Noda's struggling Democrats, but others said voters disappointed by the ruling Democrats' three-year rule would still prefer the LDP.
"I don't think anyone wants to give the Democratic Party a second chance," said Katsuhiko Nakamura, executive director at think tank Asian Forum Japan.
BUSINESS LOBBY WELCOMES ELECTION
Japan's biggest business lobby welcomed Abe's election. "The new (LDP) president is a political leader well versed in policies, has abundant experience and the ability to get things done," Keidanren Chairman Hiromasa Yonekura said in a statement.
The prospect that Abe could lead the next government after an election which Noda promised to hold "soon" may ring alarm bells at the Bank of Japan.
Abe has been among most vocal proponents of amending central bank laws to force it to do more to prop up the economy.
"His stance is cautious about the sales tax hike and focuses on economic growth. He is also a reflationary policy advocate," said Hidenori Suezawa, chief bond strategist at SMBC Nikko Securities. "It is expected that pressure on the BOJ to implement more easing policy will increase."
Abe, who became Japan's youngest post-World War Two premier in September 2006, quit after a year marked by scandals, a big election defeat and a crisis over Japan's support for U.S.-led operations in Afghanistan. He cited ill health as the reason.
The grandson of a wartime cabinet member who became one of Japan's post-war prime ministers, Abe has long called for Tokyo to tighten its alliance with the United States. He wants to revise the post-World War Two pacifist constitution.
He has also gained popularity for his tough stance on the emotive issue of abductions of Japanese citizens by North Korea decades ago.
Abe, who belongs to a conservative camp that thinks Japan has apologized too much for its wartime past, wants to replace a 1993 government statement apologizing to women forced to serve as sex slaves at wartime military brothels.
He also seeks the revision of a historic 1995 statement by then-prime minister Tomiichi Murayama, apologizing for suffering caused by Japan's wartime aggression.
Neither change would win friends among Asian neighbors.
When in office, however, Abe took a big step to repair Sino-Japanese ties, which had frayed during his predecessor Junichiro Koizumi's five years in office, in part because of Koizumi's annual visits to Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine for war dead. Abe's first visit abroad after taking office was to China.
"Based on past precedent, despite his strong rhetoric during the party race, I think he would deal with China strategically," Asia Forum Japan's Nakamura said.
The LDP, long a broad party home to both security hawks and doves, has tilted to the right in recent years.
Opinion polls suggest that it will need a coalition partner and Abe has made it clear he is eyeing a possible tie-up with a party led by populist Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto, which critics say is tapping simmering nationalist sentiment.
Whoever takes charge of the world's third-largest economy after the election will face various unfinished business and deep-rooted problems dogging the economy.
Rebuilding northeast Japan after a March 2011 earthquake and tsunami is far from complete and full decommissioning of the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant will take decades.
Any new government will have to grapple with a revamp of energy policy amid deep public worry about nuclear safety. Abe has already made clear he does not favor ditching atomic power.
In addition, a plan to double the sales tax that Noda managed to push through an opposition-controlled upper house by promising early elections is seen as just a first step towards cutting Japan's ballooning public debt.

Looking for something to replace that lackluster 8-Track, cassette, or CD player that came with your car? Instead of using some goofy adapter or FM transmitter, why not replace the entire unit with a Samsung Galaxy S III?
That was the train of thought for Steve, aka youtube user philstuffs. He had an old JVC head unit that just wasn't cutting it. So instead of spend the money on a stand-alone head unit for his vehicle, he used his trusty SGS3. He modified a standard car charger so the phone charges when the car is on and he hooked up the audio-out from his phone to the amplifier in his trunk. Simple and effective.
Before you get on his case for the phone not being centered, he knows this. He states in his youtube video description that he still needs to come up with a "prettier facia" and is even thinking about using fiberglass.
What I want to know is: How does he take the phone with him when he leaves the vehicle? From the looks of it, that facia he cooked up is removable, and he can unhook his SGS3 and be on his way. Not the most practical solution. Maybe his final design will be more practical and user friendly.

MILAN (AP) -AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has been handed a one-match ban for insulting the referee at the end of Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Udinese, the Italian league announced Monday.
"I'm surprised, I didn't do anything," Allegri said after learning of the ban. Milan is planning an urgent appeal.
Milan finished the game with nine men after both Cristian Zapata and Kevin-Prince Boateng were sent off in a woeful afternoon for the Rossoneri.
The players, who were both dismissed after two bookings, have been banned for one match.
Meanwhile, Sampdoria's Maxi Lopez has been handed a two-match suspension "for kicking the door of the referees' changing room and shouting insults at them."
Lopez could also face a fine after the matter was referred to the Italian Football Federation.

People with AIDS are at increased risk for developing esophageal and stomach carcinoma as well as non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs), according to a new study in Gastroenterology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association.
"People diagnosed with AIDS are living longer due to improved therapies. However, they remain at increased risk of developing a number of different cancers," said E. Christina Persson, PhD, of the National Cancer Institute and lead author of this study. "An elevated risk of esophageal and stomach cancers had been observed before, but we were able to look at risk for subtypes of these malignancies."
In this study, researchers analyzed data from the HIV/AIDS Cancer Match Study, which links data collected from 1980 to 2007 for 16 U.S. population-based HIV and AIDS and cancer registries. They compared risks of stomach and esophageal cancers in 596,955 people with AIDS with those of the general population.
Those with AIDS had a 69 percent and 44 percent increased risk of esophageal and stomach carcinomas, respectively. The risks of NHLs tumors of immune cells in the stomach and esophagus were also strongly elevated. Additionally, the researchers' analysis showed a significant 53 percent increased risk of cancer of the lower stomach in people with AIDS. Since Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the causes of this type of stomach cancer, one explanation for an increased risk of this cancer might be an increased prevalence of H. pylori in people with AIDS.
Another explanation for this elevated cancer risk could be more frequent use of tobacco and alcohol among people with AIDS. Programs encouraging tobacco cessation and alcohol moderation may help reduce the occurrence of esophageal and stomach carcinomas among these patients.

People with AIDS are at increased risk for developing esophageal and stomach carcinoma as well as non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs), according to a new study in Gastroenterology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association.
"People diagnosed with AIDS are living longer due to improved therapies. However, they remain at increased risk of developing a number of different cancers," said E. Christina Persson, PhD, of the National Cancer Institute and lead author of this study. "An elevated risk of esophageal and stomach cancers had been observed before, but we were able to look at risk for subtypes of these malignancies."
In this study, researchers analyzed data from the HIV/AIDS Cancer Match Study, which links data collected from 1980 to 2007 for 16 U.S. population-based HIV and AIDS and cancer registries. They compared risks of stomach and esophageal cancers in 596,955 people with AIDS with those of the general population.
Those with AIDS had a 69 percent and 44 percent increased risk of esophageal and stomach carcinomas, respectively. The risks of NHLs tumors of immune cells in the stomach and esophagus were also strongly elevated. Additionally, the researchers' analysis showed a significant 53 percent increased risk of cancer of the lower stomach in people with AIDS. Since Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the causes of this type of stomach cancer, one explanation for an increased risk of this cancer might be an increased prevalence of H. pylori in people with AIDS.
Another explanation for this elevated cancer risk could be more frequent use of tobacco and alcohol among people with AIDS. Programs encouraging tobacco cessation and alcohol moderation may help reduce the occurrence of esophageal and stomach carcinomas among these patients.
