Abraham Twerski is a rabbi and a psychiatrist and the founder of the Gateway Rehabilitation Center. He did not discover his true calling until he began working with alcoholics and drug-dependent patients through the Twelve-Step method used in Alcoholics Anonymous. In this book about the search for spirituality, Twerski claims that we become fully human through self-awareness, the ability to sacrifice person comfort and contentment in service of others, and self-improvement.

We were quite pleased to see the author proclaim that "the ennobling process of character development comprises spiritual growth." Other personal qualities explored in this book include purpose in existence, respect for others, honesty, turning one's life over to God, patience, prayer, and faith.

Twerksi sees anger management as one of the most difficult emotional problems encountered in life. Throughout the book, he uses illustrative material from his work with Twelve-Step spirituality.
